The Hypocrisy of Calvinists and Evangelicals — Example: John MacArthur over Gender Confusion

Updated: Feb 11, 2023

The following example of hypocrisy is standard fare among Reformed-Calvinists and Evangelicals. The hypocrisy is nauseating. They have standards but the standards aren’t Gods standards, but every man doing that which is right in their own eyes. The end result is blatant double standards which is hypocrisy, and then complete oblivion to it, as if they are “reprobate concerning the faith” (2 Tim 3:8). John MacArthur recently called on pastors to stand with Canadian pastors by preaching for Biblical sexual morality. He also appeared in an interview with Phil Johnson about 2022 and The Covid Crisis, Totalitarianism, and Antichrist.

In this interview MacArthur stated,

“Totalitarianism that is going to come will basically be imposed on us by Godless, Christ-hating, Bible hating, anti-Christian forces. They may not be overt about that …you want to appoint people into high positions, who are men dressed like women, and if you want to protect transgenders and all of that, then you have a Godless agenda, you have a God-hating agenda. . . . They’re not even trying to be hypocrites. They are not trying to cover up. I mean, how insane are you when you introduce someone called Rachel Levine and turn that guy into a four star general, who’s acting like a woman, who’s actually a man? . . . How perverse is this culture, it’s so far gone.”

What was the start of the gender identity crisis, gender fluidity, and then transgenderism, what MacArthur describes as “men dressed like women” and “a guy who’s acting like a woman”? MacArthur assumes that people understand what it means to dress like a woman. Do you understand? Where does scripture show this? What is the verse that tells us how women dress?

MacArthur has often referred to 1 Cor 4:6, “not to think of men above that which is written.” In a recent Q&A he said:

“I have no authority. I don’t have authority beyond the Scripture. I can never exceed what is written, 1 Cor 4:6. To do that is to become, Paul says, arrogant, and to regard yourself as superior. I have nothing to say to you that puts any demand on you if it isn’t from the Word of God.”

His interviewer, Johnson, recently wrote:

“Let me say this plainly: It is a sin to impose on others any “spiritual” standard that has no biblical basis.”

He quotes De 4:2 and 12:32, not to add or take away from God’s commands, followed by 1 Cor 4, and a summary: “That is a good guideline for how we should exercise our Christian liberty: Don’t go beyond what is written in Scripture.”

Does God’s Word say what effeminate behaviour is? Does it tell us what is transgender? In his interview, MacArthur says that men dressed like women. This is where the downfall of the nation is according to him. This is why totalitarians will rise up to control Christians — in order to protect the practice of men dressing like women. Do women dress like men? Men dress like women, when they do what? Wear dresses. That is female dress. What do men wear? They wear pants. MacArthur apparently wants a stand for gender distinctions. But it’s both partial and seriously hypocritical. That ship sailed a long time ago, when he and majority of other Reformers/Evangelicals capitulated on women’s dress.

Just now he’s saying anything about it. Why? Because men are now wearing dresses. I guess it’s a strong stand against men in dresses. Does that seem strong to you? Most men, lost or saved, are still against that. What is a strong stand in actuality is against women dressing like men, which includes the length of their hair. But you won’t hear that ever from the likes of MacArthur or other evangelicals, because that very selectively, as the NASV (which he quoted) says in 1 Cor 4:6, “exceeds what is written.” Since scripture apparently doesn’t say what female dress is, then women can dress however they want. Does it say what male dress is?

“Evangelicals” like Reformed MacArthur are way way too late on the issue of gender distinction. They gave up on it long ago. They don’t get to have a say on it, lest they want to be deemed “reprobate concerning the faith.” (2 Tim 3:8). If it is a “sin to impose on others any ‘spiritual’ standard that has no biblical basis” like Johnson said, what is MacArthur doing but sinning? And why isn’t he held accountable by that group of hypocrites? Transgenderism directly relates to their capitulation and compromise with the world a long time ago, and in truth, their women have been dressing transgenderly for many many moons already. Judgment begins with those who profess to be the house of God.

God’s standard on dress started in the Garden and are explained by passages such as De 22:5; 1 Cor 11:2-16; 1 Tim 2:9 and others. This is also the historical belief among Bible believing churches over the span of multi-millennia. What is happening today and ongoing for about seven decades, is not Biblical or historical. Hypocrites like MacArthur and majority other evangelicals should be quiet over most things happening in the world, since those things are right at home in their church, and it only reveals their hypocrisy. “Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?” (Lk 6:39). Hypocrisy also causes the lost to blaspheme the name of God (Rom 2:24).

There is an authority issue with dress, but also with length of hair. The man wearing a skirt or dress is abdicating his position or role. People learn through the symbols, as 1 Cor 11 says. It means something in the Bible. Men that wear women's garments are called transgender, but what about women wearing men's garments? I expose this serious issue further in this article on Immodesty and Transgenderism.

Grace Community Church puts a worship team with female worship leaders on the platform doing Charismatic style, sentimental, fleshly, worldly, ungodly music too, blending their worship. Multiple evils there, and profane “worship,” further illustrating the wicked hypocrisy taking place among “evangelicals” and reformers. Why not go after this pragmatic evil to? But no. To MacArthur its the gag factor of the Demoncrats having a General dressing like a woman.

What is wrong with that though, from Scripture? How do you dress like a man? No instruction, even though he’ll “never exceed what is written.” Right. Just an emotional reaction, assuming others will join him. Will he address woman dressing like men? Or butch haircuts on women? Or short hair, shoulder length or shorter on woman? Or female “worship” leaders? Or ungodly, and worldly CCM music? No. You don’t want to get in trouble, like Adam didn’t want to get in trouble with Eve. But it speaks volumes, what I’ve been saying for a long time. Reprobates concerning the faith. Playing church, while inside dead mans bones. Merely another form of religion, only so much more subtle and deceptive. But isn’t that the hallmark of Satan and this ministers of righteousness (2 Cor 11:12-15)?

Do you concur with MacArthur? Are you also a hypocrite, a “reprobate concerning the faith”? Are you the hypocrite of whom Scripture says “shall not come before him …and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web.” (Job 13:16; 8:13-14)? Would Christ’s denunciation of the hypocrites in Lk 11:39-44 be said of you, who “make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.” (v. 39). Repentance is the answer, true Biblical repentance, both for salvation and fellowship with Christ.
