Deity of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God the Son.

Hebrews 1:1-3,8 "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his [God's] glory, and the express image of his [God's] person, and upholding all things by the word of his [God's] power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom."

The Bible says there is only one God (De. 6:4; Ze. 14:9; Mk. 12:29; 1 Cor. 8:6; Eph. 4:5), but He is manifest in three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (1 Jn. 5:17).

Gods Word give this warning about them who deny the Trinity: "He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son." (1 Jn. 2:22b).

Consider some clear Biblical evidence how we know that Jesus Christ is God:

  1. His name is “Emmanuel” which means “God with us” (Matt 1:23).

  2. He is equal with God. “Who [“Christ Jesus” v. 5], being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:” (Phil 2:6).

  3. Only God is named "I AM" (Ex. 3:14), and Jesus said He was "I am" (Jn. 8:24, 58; Ac. 9:5).

  4. Jesus was called "God" by God the Father. "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, . . . But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom." (Heb. 1:1,10). This was a quote from the OT, where He is called God as well (Ps 45:6).

  5. God is the Judge (Jn 8:50; Heb 9:27), and Jesus Christ is given all judgment (Jn 5:27). “For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.” (Jn 5:26-27).

  6. God purchased the church, that is those who are born again, with His own blood, “the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood" (Ac 20:28) and we know it was Christ that shed His blood for our sins (Eph 1:7; Col 1:13-14; 1 Pet 1:18-19).

  7. Only God can forgive sins (Mk. 2:7; Lk. 5:21), and Jesus forgave sins (Matt. 9:2-6; Mk. 2:1-7, 10).

  8. Only God can know the thoughts of man (2 Ch. 2:20), and Jesus knew the thoughts of man (Matt. 4:4; Mk. 2:6-8; Lk. 9:46-47; Jn. 6:60-61; cf. Jn. 5:15-16 and Jn. 7:19-20). "And Jesus knew their thoughts" (Matt. 12:25).

  9. Only God is to be worshipped and kneeled to (Rev. 5:14; 7:11; 11:16; 14:7; 19:10), and Jesus was both worshipped (Heb. 1:6-7; Rev. 15:3-4) and kneeled to (Mk. 10:17) by both man and Angels. Even in the OT He is called God (Ps 45:6) and Lord (Ps. 45:11) and is to be worshipped (Ps. 45:11). Man on the other hand is never to be bowed to or worshipped (Ac. 10:25-26; Rom. 1:25), nor angels (Col. 2:18; Rev. 19:10; 22:8-9).

  10. Many times the Son of God and God are noted to be one and the same (e.g. Jn 12:44-45). “Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.” (Jn 12:44-45).

  11. Only God is the Saviour (Is. 43:11; 2 Tim. 1:10; Ti. 3:4), and Jesus Christ is the only Saviour (Ti. 2:13; 2 Pet. 1:11; 2:20; 3:18; 1 Jn. 4:14). Both God the Father and God the Son, even in the same passage, are called the Saviour (Ti. 2:10 and 13).

  12. Only God is omnipresent, that is being everywhere at the same time, and Jesus Christ testified that He was in Heaven and on Earth at the same time (Jn. 3:13, 31).

  13. Only God is from Heaven above, and Jesus said that He was not of this world but from Heaven above (Jn. 8:23-24).

  14. Only God is "the first and the last" (Is. 41:4; 44:6; 48:12) and Jesus Christ is "the first and the last" (Rev. 1:8, 11; 22:13).

  15. Only God is the Creator (Gen. 1:1) and Gods Words says that Jesus Christ created everything (Jn. 1:1-3; Eph. 3:9; Heb. 1:2, 10; Col. 1:15-18; Pr. 8:22-31).

  16. Only God is from everlasting (Ps 41:13; 106:48; Is 63:16) and Jesus is from everlasting (Mic 5:2; Jn. 1:15; Rev 1:8, 11; 21:6; 22:13).

  17. Jesus was God manifest in the flesh. "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory." (1 Tim. 3:16).

  18. Jesus is to be honoured equally with God the Father. “That all men should honour the Son even as they honour the Father.” (Jn. 5:23). This would be blasphemous if Jesus wasn’t God.

  19. Jesus name is equal to God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit. In Matt 28:19 we read: "baptizing them in the NAME of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" Note also that "name" is not plural, but singular.

  20. Jesus Christ is called "Lord" and "God" consistently in the Scriptures. For example, Thomas called Him "my Lord and my God" (Jn 20:28), King David calls Him "Lord" (Ps. 110:1) which Jesus acknowledged (Lk. 20:41-44), etc. Hundreds of times Jesus is called Lord (i.e. almost 100 times in Acts alone, e.g. Ac 2:20, 21, 25, 34, 36, 39; 3:19, 22; 4:24, 26, 29, 33). The Greek word translated “Lord” is “kurios.” It is the same word used for God in Mat. 12:29. To call Jesus Christ Lord is to acknowledge that He is Almighty God. God Himself calls Jesus "Lord" and "God."

  21. Jesus Christ is "The mighty God, The everlasting Father" (Is. 9:6). "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Is. 9:6).

  22. Jesus Christ is called "the true God, and eternal life." (1 Jn. 5:20b).

  23. Jesus is revealed as God from Heaven (Ac. 9:3-5).

  24. Jesus is the Son of God, which makes Him equal with God (Jn. 5:18; 10:30), which the Jews acknowledged (Jn. 5:17-19).

Jesus said, "If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake." (Jn. 14:7-11).

There are yet many more examples that could be given to easily prove the deity of Jesus Christ.

The Bible declares "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Cor. 2:14). But "He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God." (Jn. 8:47).

The Lord Jesus Christ said that if we do not believe that He is God and our Saviour, then we will die in our sins, and that means we will be lost in the lake of fire forever. "And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins." (Jn. 8:23-24). "Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father" (1 Jn. 2:23a).

Any one that denies the deity of Christ is a liar and a seducer, and John warned, "These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you." (1 Jn. 2:26). There is a spirit of error (the devil) and a Spirit of truth (God). A true born again believer must try the spirits to see whether they are of God. Any spirit that denies that Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh and denies the Trinity, is the "spirit of the antichrist" (1 Jn. 4:3).

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." (1 Jn. 4:1-3).
